“Hi, I’m wondering who you are?”

Well, since the arrival of the Sound Magazine in print and the launch of our website and Facebook page, we’ve been getting that a lot.  The title of this blog is actually a quote from one of our very first Facebook messages.

So here you go, (soon-to-be) adoring fans of Sound Magazine; here’s how the legend goes: Cape & Islands Sound Magazine aka  Sound Magazine is the brainchild of Nantucket’s own Arlene O’Reilly, of Mind’s Eye Productions and Arts Nantucket fame. In late October 2012, this thing called Hurricane Sandy happened, which “was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history” according to Wikipedia. As Arlene watched the storm rip through New Jersey and her home New York City (don’t hold it against her), she felt a lump in her throat and grew pale; the places she called home were being attacked by Mother Nature unlike anything she had seen before. Hurricane Sandy moved up the coast and did quite a job on her current home of Nantucket too. Heavy rains, lots of localized flooding and high winds paralyzed the island for a few days, but the effects were nothing like what our coastal neighbors south of us felt and are still feeling.  During the aftermath, Arlene felt a combination of sadness, caused by devastation; and feelings of gratitude, for this place we call home. The Sound region of Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod was spared by Sandy’s wrath.

L-R: Lisa Frey, Laura Martin, John Tiernan, Siobhain Klawetter, Tihomir Ivanov, Arlene O'Reilly, Betsy Rich, Natalie CimineroFrom this event, it spurred Arlene’s idea of magazine that has been on the back burner for 4 years –  Cape & Islands Sound Magazine was born. A vehicle to celebrate nature, history, culture, healthy-living and the incredibly remarkable people who live here. So speaking of incredibly remarkable people, Arlene thought this project would be best served with people she’d met on Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket, who shared a similar love for this region. She believed this group of men & women had the skill sets, strengths & love to launch this puppy. And we did. The Sound Publishing Group consists of local professionals, from multiple generations and the entire Sound region. I guess, in a way, we’re all kind of remarkable in her eyes.

Especially me. And I get the cool job of blogging & telling you what we’re up to, allowing you to peak into not the individual personalities, but the collective personality of The Sound Publishing Group (Well, you might get to know me a little personally, but I’ll try to limit the pictures of my remarkable 8-year old).

If you too, were dying to know who we are, here you go:
Arlene O’Reilly of Nantucket
Alexandra LaPaglia of Nantucket
Betsy Rich of Hyannis, Cape Cod (that’s me!)
John Tiernan of Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard
Lisa Frey of Nantucket
Nancy Woodside of Hyannis, Cape Cod
Siobhain Klawetter of Nantucket
Tihomir Ivanov of Nantucket

We’re incredibly honored for the love and support that we’ve received for the first issue of Sound Magazine so far. Check out our super cool promo video that  Arlene & Lisa put together (Arlene did the animation & Lisa did the sound editing), which is now playing at the Nantucket Dreamland!

Copies of  Sound Magazine are available on the entire Hy-Line island ferry fleet, as we are the exclusive onboard magazine. Additional copies can be found on:

More pick-up locations are coming soon!

So we’re having a launch party on the 25th to thank all of our supporters and I’m going to take pictures and blog about it. And then you’ll REALLY see who we are 🙂
